S M I L E ( ? )

You were tall and wanted to help. You were help and like me, climbing. Life answered, climbing without preparing for varying altitudes. The higher we went the thinner the veil, and deeper the well.

The car was as new as your presence in the passenger seat.

I wanted to drive us to a place where repairs weren’t necessary, and sacrifice not a disappointing vow. Even then, your heat demanded I seek ways to cool you, and responding asked if you were hot. But it wasn’t what I felt, nor wanted to ask. Every moment real and imagined remains etched in the mind.

What can be said when someone means more to us than we have the strength to admit? What can be said when every moment meant more than can be admitted to the self?

The car was as new as your presence in the passenger seat.

Regardless what was never asked or said, I can’t help but think it’s never too late to just smile.
