B U R S T I N G

i’m standing in the middle
something about us screams
1970’s
maybe the bellbottoms or
the blue Cadillac on the right

they are looking straight into
the lens, all of us are smiling
i am embarrassed and looking
up at her with a silly grin

a bowl of pomegranates sat on
the sidewalk, a treat from their tree

i was envious of her for smiling
on command so in the next shot
tried to be like her but it was out
of place like the pomegranates

today i would ask to be photographed
alone with the pomegranates, after
bursting them against the unchanging
blue car

life tends to color us in shades of sweet,
sour and nutty
